Five fibres, and what each one is for.

Para-aramid

Does not melt. Above its service temperature it chars instead of dripping, which is why it holds in a fire and in a cut.

Cut-resistant and ballistic protection, ropes and slings, composites.

Meta-aramid

Flame resistance is a property of the fibre itself, not a finish applied to the cloth. It does not melt and does not drip.

Firefighter turnout gear, hot gas filtration, protective workwear.

Modacrylic

Inherently flame retardant with a soft hand. Takes dye well and blends cleanly with aramid and viscose.

Protective clothing, upholstery, sleepwear, faux fur.

Viscose

Comfort and moisture management next to skin, and drape in a blend that would otherwise be stiff.

Linings, next-to-skin layers, apparel blends.

Polyamide

Abrasion resistance and elastic recovery. Holds its shape through repeated wash and wear.

Blend reinforcement, technical apparel, hosiery.

Yarn

Spun and filament, single and plied, in para-aramid, meta-aramid, modacrylic, viscose and polyamide. Natural and dyed lots.

Fabric

Woven meta-aramid, para-aramid and viscose, and blends of the three, in plain and twill constructions, in roll form.

Three reasons we blend, not just supply.

  1. So it can be worn for a shift

    Para-aramid on its own is abrasive against skin. Blended with viscose or modacrylic, the protection stays and the garment becomes something a person can work in for a full day.

  2. So the protection survives washing

    Inherently flame-retardant fibres keep their property through repeated laundering. A chemical finish washes out, and nobody can tell by looking.

  3. So weight comes down without the spec going with it

    Aramid carries its strength per unit of weight. Blending lets a cloth get lighter while it still meets the protection it was specified for.
